What’s In My… Filofax!

Random fact about me: I’m obsessed with my planner. Which really isn’t a random fact if you’ve read my blog for any length of time. I’ve posted about last year’s planner, and my planner the year before that. I love getting a new planner and switching things up. In fact, I’ve been using this planner since last fall and I already have my next one in mind… so I’d best get to posting this one before it’s old news!

I became obsessed with getting a Filofax after seeing how efficient, creative, & customizable they are. Filofaxes have been around for years and are HUGE in the UK, with entire blogs & meet-ups devoted just to the way people fill up their Filos.

I mean, seriously. Just do a quick Pinterest search, and you’ll come up with so much Filofax inspiration that you’ll want to run to the website and buy one right now.

(So really, don’t search Pinterest. Otherwise you’ll hate me for giving you something new to obsess about.)

(Or maybe I’m just a little bit insane. Either way, moving on.)

I bought the personal size Adelphi planner in Scarlet from Pens & Leather (much cheaper than ordering directly from Filofax). To customize it, I made dividers out of our black & white wedding photos. I love the memories these photos hold, and I wanted to have them with me all the time. They inspire me. :-)

To make the dividers, I set up pages in Photoshop, printed on matte photo paper, and mounted them onto patterned scrapbook paper to thicken them up.

So this is how my planner is divided: across the top, I have 3 tabs labeled Calendar, Projects, and Blog. These are the 3 tabs I use most, which is why they got the more prominent plastic tabs at the top (sold at any office supply store). Along the right side, my tabs are labeled Tasks, Ideas, Finances, Fitness, Personal, and Bucket List.

I just made up the categories according to what info I want to have on me and in one place. I’m all about finding ways to be more efficient!

There are all kinds of weekly, monthly, & lined pages you can purchase to tailor your Filo to you. I chose the 1-week per spread layout, because if I can’t fit my daily to dos in that small space, then well… I’d say it’s too much to do in one day. I also got a 1-month per spread layout and a fold-out yearly view calendar, for a quick look at the big picture. For now, that just includes birthdays, weddings, and anniversaries.

Some other goodies I got were little circle stickers to color code my daily/weekly to dos, a mini mirror for quick touch ups when no one is looking, and a colorful palette of sticky flags & post it notes.

And of course, no planner would be complete without a special, coordinating pen. Mine is a lovely Vera Bradley ballpoint. It writes smoothly and doesn’t bleed through the pages— double win, in my opinion!

And so friends, that is all for today. May you be inspired to go forth and customize your own planners, if you haven’t already!

Speaking of your own planners… do you use a planner? If yes, what kind? Spread the love, people! You know I”ll be needing a new one sooner or later. I have my eye on an Erin Condren Life Planner for 2013! :-)

April Highs

Dear blog,

I’m so very sorry I’ve been neglecting you this month year. But you see, my life has been so completely full of so many wonderful, interesting, & challenging things, that… well… there just hasn’t been the time.

I realized today that I haven’t really posted anything “personal” this year— no photos of the day-to-day of our lives, how we spend our time, etc. I’m tired of saying “I’ve been too busy to post.” This year has just been flying by, and while I’m loving every bit of us living it— and I need to make the time to document it. Transitioning back into a lifestyle blog (non-work, non-business) seems like the best idea!

April alone has been so much fun. Husband & I are busy bees, and on top of that I’ve very recently been forced to make some lifestyle changes (more on that later). But change is good, and it’s what I need right now. Out with the bad, in with the good. Out with the old, in with the new. Focusing on LESS (my One Little Word) of everything.

Let’s take a look at the highlights of April, shall we? Hard to believe we’re already halfway through the month… and over a quarter of the way into 2012!

Joshua & I have been satisfying our Mexican addiction & enjoying the warm (but fluctuating) Virginia weather by eating outside whenever it’s nice out. We’ve been terrible at grocery shopping this month, so our go-to has been take-out and restaurants.

Easter weekend, we had a quiet couple of days at home working, although we did venture out to Georgetown with Lady to go to the home of DC Cupcakes. We met my girlfriend Ashley and her boyfriend Thomas there, and we enjoyed a nice afternoon full of sunshine and sugar.

Those cupcakes, by the way? Seriously amazing. And so worth the line that wrapped around the block to get them.

I’ve mentioned before that we live in base housing. We were lucky enough to get a house with a fenced in yard for Lady. By “yard,” I mean a small plot of grass. Too small to purchase a lawn mower for… or so we thought. Then one day our yard became a jungle overnight. The grass grew taller than Lady, and suddenly… something had to be done…

Enter Husband. He went to Lowes & bought us a weed whacker, then proceeded to cut the the grass while I stood by and drooled at how sexy it was. Why does weed whacking attract me? It doesn’t, but I love my man in a white T-shirt & jeans… add to that his strong arms, rugged combat boots, and initiative to clean up our yard and well— I just love him, is all I’ll say. :-)

One of the biggest challenges this month was discovering that I have a wheat allergy. I went to the allergist on a whim (mainly out of curiosity), and asked to be tested for a gluten intolerance. Turns out, I’m not only allergic to wheat, but also dustmites, cockroaches (ew… you remember from my time living in North Carolina how I feel about these), cats, and dogs.

Okay, I knew about the cat allergy. But dogs? DOGS? Ha, ha. I may be “allergic” to Lady, but… she isn’t going anywhere. Ever. And that’s all there is to it. :-)

One of the BEST things to happen this month was that my family came to visit. My mom was here for 5 days from Albany, and my brother and his girlfriend were here for 3 from Philly. It was so good to have my family here! I miss them so much, all the time. Joshua & I took them to a local winery for a tasting and some delicious food. We all left with several bottles of vino!

We also took them to Kings Dominion, the closest theme park here to Quantico. What BLAST that was! We went on a bunch of rollercoasters, played some games, and got soaking wet on the water rides. It was the best day!

With the warm weather upon us (and my hair’s desperate need for a trim & some color), I’ve been getting creative with my longer locks. I’ve rediscovered my curling iron, learned a cool twist on YouTube, piled it all on top in a bun, and ditched the bangs with a skinny headband. It’s been kind of fun playing around… and now I’m debating getting lowlights.

While my mom was in town, I took her shopping with me to get new glasses. I love my mom’s opinion. She’s the best shopping buddy ever. A pair of prescription glasses and sunglasses later for me, 2 pairs of sunglasses later for her, and we were out the door.

My dear sweet husband’s Dell laptop finally gave up on him (a mere 2 years after he bought it), so we financed a beautiful new 17″ MacBook Pro for him— the same computer I have at work. He is in love, I was happy to teach him the ways of Apple, and all is well is our happy home. :-)

Hello, blogland!

Happy February 1st! Back with my first ever vlog.

Note to self: video blogs are awkward. And… apparently I look up when I’m thinking. A lot. Again… awkward!

I wanted to “introduce” myself to you readers. Am I this awkward in real life? Probably. ♥

At the end I meant to say, “have a good day.” But I recorded this at 11pm last night… again, too busy to write! Ahhh when will it all slow down?

P.S. Dogs can’t say hi. Haha.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you & yours!!! It was another whirlwind holiday season for Husband and I, and the last of our family left today. We spent the morning cleaning, then went to lunch at Panera and on a shopping trip to Michaels. We’re feeling clean, recharged, and ready for everything 2012 has to offer!
I’d love to stay and share all about our holidays, but it’s time for some dinner & taking down our Christmas ornaments! I’ll be back this week to share some holiday photos, my new list of 12 goals in 2012, and list of the projects I hope to accomplish this year.
Cheers, blog land!

Makin’ Moves

Once upon a time… I fell off the face of the earth.
Just kidding!
Well hello there, strangers. It’s been some time, hasn’t it? Like over two months? Shame on me, I know… I was just going through a bit of a rough patch and not quite sure how to handle it. That, and a blog identity crisis.
You know… the usual.
Highlights of the past couple months have included:

♥ Moving! Husband & I are now living in a lovely town home on base. And we love it.

♥ Dressing up as Kat Von D for Halloween. With my exorcist priest husband, Father Karras.

♥ New job! I’m back to being a corporate creative professional, working at a company that does all their work for the Department of Defense… specifically in programs to aid military families! Hollerrrr.

♥ Wedding season coming to a close— Felice & Nikki’s weddings were completely gorgeous, and now we have a new engagement to celebrate. Megan!

♥ Sergeant! Husband was promoted and I might just be the proudest wife on the planet. Go Joshua! Love to see his hard work rewarded.

♥ Breaking Dawn midnight premiere. Don’t even get me started… I’m so obsessed.

♥ The Marine Corps Ball! And seeing Justin Timberlake in real life. Yes, ours was the ball he attended. :-)

♥ An amazingly wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with my family in New York. I am so, so, so thankful for each and every one of them.

So what would you like to see photos of? You know I have photos of each and every memory. The blog may be put on pause, but the camera never is!
